ACH return codes identify the reason an ACH payment was returned by the client’s bank. The
National Automated Clearing House Association (Nacha) has identified 85 district types of
return codes. ACH return codes begin with the letter “R” and are followed by two digits
indicating what the code is based on Nacha rules for the ACH network.
Some codes are more common than others and this article with explain the most common
return codes in further detail.
R01 - Insufficient Funds
The available balance in the selected bank account is not sufficient to cover the dollar value of
the debit entry request.
Recommendation: Ensure you have enough settled funds in your bank account to cover the
dollar amount requested.
R03 & R04 - The account number structure is not valid.
